A Comment on Comments

Once upon a time, a long long time ago, I wrote a blog post about a woman who does not tip. After stiffing her server several different times, the restaurant refused to serve her anymore and then the lady got her panties and wig all in a twist and it made the news. Read that blog here. Last week, someone posted a comment on it and I must respond because what she wrote was so very special. Her comments are in bold:

Instead of expecting a customer to pay you for your "hardwork" you should complain to your boss or the owner of the establishment!! What urks me is that you feel entitled to receive a tip instead of a pay check.

What should I be telling my boss? That I want $24 an hour so that tips are no longer needed? I'm sure he will jump right on that. I don't feel entitled to to receive a tip instead of a pay check. I don't get a paycheck, bitch. Okay, I do get one, but it's usually for $12, so yes, the tip is important.

You know there are all types of Jobs out there that should be entitled to tips but they never get one.

Since you capitalized "Jobs," I assume you are referring to the Biblical figure, Job. I know he suffered much pain by losing his wealth, his children and his health all because God wanted to prove to Satan that Job would continue to serve his Lord, but I don't think Job served God in the way that waiters do, like with a tray and taking drink orders. Maybe Job deserved a tip for keeping his faith in God despite the many hardships that fell his way but I think you're getting your Bible stories mixed up, lady.

For instance a teacher will teach a child all day for over 250 days a year. They receive pay for just the amount of days they teach and then that pay is divided by 12 and then taxes, insurance, and a few other fees are taken out. When the teacher receives their pay it equals about half of their gross pay. And then if they are a high school teacher they have to take that pay and buy things for their classroom and supply a lot of different things to make it easier and more enjoyable for the child to learn. They also have to have nice clothing and so forth. And if they are a coach they get paid around 125.00 a month to work 35 to 40 extra hours a week which.comes out to less than a dollar an hour. Do they receive tips? No and they serve the public way more than a waiter or waitress. Do they complain? No!!!

I don't really get this argument. Teachers do complain. A lot. I am friends with teachers. I have been a teacher. Everyone complains about their job. One teacher got suspended for complaining on her blog so your argument that teachers don't ever complain is out the window. Next?

There are so many jobs out there that deserve tips but it is in thought of to give this person a tip. I am not a teacher. I actually have a job where I " serve" the public every day and I.do not get tips.

This sentence is of the kind that makes ,Ithard to know what talking about you. Are. " Sorry" you do Not get tips. You should talk to your pimp about that not tips getting.

If you are so worried about your pay then get a different job or go to your employer and ask for more pay or get the laws changed so they have to pay you min. Wage.

Note to self: Tomorrow after work, get the laws changed. Should be easy.

I have been reading your blog out of complete boredom while I get over a surgery.

Good luck with the lap band.

You are the whinest, spoiled, over payer, jerk I have ever seen. I know I have never been a customer in any of the places you have worked. But if I was I would leave, ask for another waiter, or turn you into the board of health. In fact I do believe that every place you have worked or do work at should be deeply looked into by the board of health.

I don't know what an "over payer" is but thank you and for all you know, you have been in my station before. How would you even know? Feel free to turn me "into" the board of health. (Is that like turning a frog into a prince?) They love when people "turn someone in" for blogging. Blogging has such an impact on the cleanliness of the kitchen and you would truly be doing them a service.

I do hope that you get fired, and that you are black listed at all future job openings and that you have to work at a "real" job and you get paid only what you deserve.

Fired? From your lips to God's ears, but hopefully, I won't ever end up on the Restaurant Black List that is circulated amongst restaurant managers throughout the country because there is totally a Restaurant Black List that is circulated amongst restaurant managers throughout the country. Yeah. Uh huh.

I also hope someone takes ajax and washes your moth out and that God punishes you for the way you talk about children!!!!!!

Please do not wash my moth with Ajax. Moths are very delicate creatures and do not deserve to be washed with harsh chemicals like Ajax. You are a horrible person to even suggest such a thing and I should turn you in to PETA for even threatening such action. Moths are God's creatures! If God wants to punish me for the way I talk about children, I will look to Job for inspiration. But really, even God has got to know that sometimes kids are a big fat pain in the ass.

Grow up get a real job and quit complaining about your current or past jobs you big spoiled jack a**.....

I will quit complaining when there is nothing left to complain about, you big spoiled cu**..... (cunt face.)

Thank you for the comment. I really do read every single comment that is posted on the blog and it means a lot to me that people even bother to write anything at all. This particular comment was an extra special helping of crazy though and I loved it.

"Good luck with the lap band." That's one of your best lines to date. To hell with this guy. He's as bad as the exotic dancer with the "real job." Keep doing what you do. Yours is my favorite blog.

You just made my day.

I don't suppose you really COULD turn him in to PETA, could you? I mean, really. Threatening poor innocent moths...on a BLOG, no less.

I love your response and truly enjoy reading your blog. I am not and have never been a waitress (I think I'd last about 30 seconds before I decked someone...) That being said, I think what is unfortunate is that many people don't realize that wait staff don't make a "regular wage" and, not only do they depend on tips for income, they get taxed on it whether people leave it or not. I do my best to be a good tipper (usually 20-25%) - would tip more if I had it to give. :-) ~Trish

Haha that was great. I LOVE all your come backs at her..don't know what was best
"moths are delicate creatures", "good luck with lapband" or "you don't get tipped? You should talk to your pimp about that?" ahhhhhh fuck it! The whole thing was awesome. LOVE you and your blog :)

I particularly enjoyed your Biblical exegesis of Job. I wish more ministers read BW. I also wish we got tips...but alas, there are other benefits to the job.

I LOVE that this woman actually thinks she is going into restaurants where servers don't feel the exact same way as you do. A majority of servers can certainly relate to your feelings (hello, that is why we follow:)! I truly hope she enjoys the hospital food and deeply considers tipping the nurses that have to deal with her.

BW, I want you to know that I love you. Love your writing, love your attitude, and every time I see a new post from you, it pretty much makes me day.
Sorry you get the Crazies on here sometimes. At least they're entertaining!

This is my first time reading your blog and I must say I absolutely love you! That was the most hilarious comment response I have ever read.

I'm glad you can find humor in others ignorance rather than let it get to you. I was a server and a hostess while in school and some of those people drove me insane.

As for her "real job" comment, I guess some people just don't understand our economy these days. SMH...

So...when you turn someone into the board of health, do you use a sparkly wand like Glinda, or go wandless with scary Elphaba hands?

Hahaha, thank you for the laugh! You are truly awesome, brutally honest and hilarious. Keep up the great blog!

I do believe she said she'd turn you "into" the board of health. In which case, you would not only have another job, but you would be an entire board. Fascinating.

LMAO...love your respones to her rude a** comments! Love your blog!

Wow. How can some people be so ignorant about what a server is and what they do all the while either receiving zero or very little pay. And to say service is not a real job? Isn't that exactly what Jesus taught? To serve? She needs to stay home. Cook for herself. Serve herself. Because clearly she is NOT about helping our brothers and sisters on this Earth. Tsk...tsk...

Give an idiot the internet, and they will read something they can't comprehend. Teach an idiot how to use the internet, and this comment is born. Seriously, I have a love/hate relationship with the internet. In one aspect, I get to read amazing blogs like this one but on the other hand, people like this person get to express their barely decipherable unintelligent opinions. Just because you live in a country where you have the right to express your opinion, doesn't mean you should. Well done bitchy waiter for setting that person straight while amusing the rest of us.

I love the idea that management should just pay you for what you are worth. Because they totally should. And if that means that my artichoke dip is now $45, well then,. . . ummm . . .I'm gonna have to eat at home.

As far as the teachers comment. . .Do NOT get me started. Because my comment will get hate mail.

Oh hell, might as well: Teaching is a very valuable profession. It is a TON of work. And it is important work. and in my state (Texas), the teachers union ensures that teachers are paid on par with other professionals. They make about the same as accountants architects, and rookie attorneys. except their work year is 9 months long, they have better benefits, do not have to take out malpractice insurance and have fewer educational requirements.

If you're talking PRIVATE school teachers? OMG -- way underpaid. But public school? the data says they make out just fine.

I'm gonna pay for that, aren't I?

I want to say one of your funniest ever but that is impossible. I am stymied as to why people who aren't in the business and/or who just don't get it would even follow you. Don't forget Steve JOBS. Excellent, as always, BW.

My jaw dropped so many times reading this person's comment. Wow. I think I may have smacked my forehead and now feel a headache coming on. Some people really are just plain stupid. Isn't there some random island we can stick the stupid people on??

Anonymous said...

These idiots are the ones who come to the restaurants and treat the servers like fucking second class citizens, not even considerate and aware of what servers go through and how important tips are to us ...always assuming that we can easily find a better job which most of the time is not feasible since some careers require degrees, some of us are still going to school for our degrees, and most of the time these stupid office jobs pay less than a server job, I used to walk with over a hundred a day from a busy night,,, venting is just something to help us relate and share stories with each other,,, everyone vents in every job,,, asking for a raise or more pay from restaurants is a complete joke, that will be a miracle, so don't tell us like it's so easy to do and get that part resolved.

I am a proud mother of 4 kids who have been shown not only to have a deep respect for the food service industry, but to also have menu choice picked out (including salad dressing choice, etc., ) before the server comes to the table, but above all else......DO NOT TOUCH THE SUGAR PACKETS OR SALT AND PEPPER unless they actually need it. They always say please and thank you, they know to tip 20% minimum. They also "crumb" the table after they are through. When one needs to ask for something else, they ask everyone if they need something too so the server only makes 1 trip
So, I do not feel offended in any way when you blog about the occasional "demon seeds" that you get sometimes. Some parents just don't get it.... If the shoe fits, wear it!
Keep doing what you do best....

It "urks" me to see punctuation, spelling and grammatical errors in every sentence of a comment in which she claims to be defending, among other miscellaneous and unrelated professions, teaching. Priceless.

*V8 slap to forehead!* Another idiot who doesn't get it.

First of all, if restaurants had to pay servers to compensate them for not getting tips anymore--yeah--most would just close their doors. Sorry, but they just can't afford to pay that kind of money without raising the menu prices DRASTICALLY. Those of us in the business know this, and honestly, as much as I love my servers, I'm not paying them that much money since I'm sure my customers don't want to pay $18 for an omelet with home fries and toast.

These people are idiots who complain about your blog...People--it's called the BITCHY Waiter...not the everything is sunshine and lollipops waiter. Sheesh!

You have the patience of a saint, BW. =) I just couldn't deal with these people. Have a great night!

I read your blog every chance I get and I think you are awesome! I completely understand where you are coming from on this one, and I agree with you 100%. I have worked in the food service industry as well, and it is very demanding, hard work, and the pay is shit. Tips are what pay the bills (or at least the really important ones), and take care of any other expenses like gas, toiletries, and groceries. Paychecks are a joke when you are a server. It is very obvious through some of these comments that these people have never had to endure a 12 hour shift with a bitch who sends her steak back five times or some cunt swab who orders a meal and has so many substitutions the only thing left of the original meal is the piece of chicken it comes with. And after all that is said and done, we take the heat for the kitchen's mistake if it isn't perfect. Not to mention the occasional dick weed who has a few too many and thinks he can test the fat to muscle ratio of my ass when I walk by. So until the asshole who speaks of a "real" job turns in their plush downtown office for an apron they can shut the hell up.

your blog is truly amazing. i am a cocktail waitress in a fine dining establishment, and i completely understand the cliental you deal with. entitled, pompous ass holes. the bottom line is, if you cannot afford to tip your server, you cannot afford to go out to dine. tipping has been a stable of the service industry for as long as it has existed. so when people act like it will one day change, or that those who choose not to partake will no longer be looked at as classless jerks, it makes me laugh!

CrayonEater said...

What exactly is a "real job" anyway. I have never figured this out.

Loved the 'I've been reading your blog out of boredom while I recover...' and your great response. Since I try NOT to get distracted by your wonderful writing, and fail regularly, this person is a liar as well as a thief.

If you aren't going to tip, don't eat in restaurants with wait staff. You're stealing time and opportunity (the table could have someone who is honest at it). It's that simple, folks.

Anonymous said...

You must be really bored to make my comment one of your topics of the day. I may have made a few errors in grammar; however, I was getting over surgery due to cancer at the time and I was on medicine for pain. I have been a waitress, before that surgery I was a volunteer. I did waitress while in college. If I had a problem with my job or pay I went to my boss, I did not take that problem out on my customers. I have a husband who teaches and coaches. He makes less than most waiters and waitresses yet he has never complained. I have a little girl who is a blessing. I know you have family members who have children. Do you really hate children that bad? I can't understand why you complain so much and say such hurtful things about people. A tip may be important to you but if you hate your job that much find another job. You seem to be a good writer. Why not become a free lance writer. Why come off as an a**? Why call me names when you do not know me. Praying you find something that makes your life worth living...God bless
