Give My Regards to (the) Broadway (McDonald's)

The buzz of Times Square is all around me. The annoyance of waiting tables has gotten to be so great that I poked myself in the leg with my Actor's Equity pin to jolt me back into pursuing what I love. I am at an audition today and sitting in Duffy Square waiting for my appointment. I hear a machine that is spewing water and noise all for the sake of cleaning the street, I hear buses and cabs whizzing past a giant McDonald's sign that is all tricked out in neon, glitz and tacky and two feet away from me I just heard a tourist exclaim that her cell phone is a piece of shit. Two short blocks north of me is the location of the Houlihan's that I spent so much time in; it's Tropicana Tanning Zone now or something and I think it too is closed. There are a lot of us who can say "I used to work in that dump." New York City is strewn with places that I have either worked at or tried to get a job at. These places are like ghosts, always just around the corner ready to jump out and scare me.

A few days ago, I was in the Union Square area trying to find a place to eat. I walked past Chat n Chew, a down home country cookin' kind of place that always satisfies my craving for mac and cheese or chicken fried something. Over the years, I have applied for a job there many times. Something about its familiar food and the fact that the servers wear whatever they want appeals to me. A few months ago, I was there and had an interview with a manager who was very enthusiastic about my possible employment. The last words he told me were, "I will call you next week to set something up." He never did. I can only assume that he was snatched away by death because what other reason could there possibly be that he never followed through on his plan to let me serve mashed potatoes and a turkey and dressing sandwich? Surely, his dying breath was filled with regret as he tried to tell his loved ones, "Make sure you call The Bitchy Waiter to work at Chat n Chew. His phone number is on his resume (cough, cough) and I left his resume... (cough) on (cough, cough, wheeze) my (cough, wheeze, gasp)..." As he expired, his family probably cried out in grief, "But wait! Where did you leave his resume? We must call The Bitchy Waiter." So I didn't eat at Chat n Chew.

I walked over to Union Square Cafe because Giada De Laurentiis from The Food Network once told me that the bar has really wonderful complimentary spiced nuts. Okay, she didn't just tell me, she said it on television, but still, they sounded good. I peered into the window and saw all the servers in long white bistro aprons setting their tables. They weren't open yet. I flashed back to a time I was applying for a job there. I recalled looking at the starched white linens that covered the tables and thinking that I was under dressed for the interview. Tablecloths spell out fancy eatin' and my jeans and t-shirt were not a good match for that particular job search. On that day I moved on just as I did a few days ago. Next?

Standing in front of The Blue Water Grill, I knew that it was too expensive for me. Unless they had some kind of buy one app get an entree, cocktail and dessert for free, it was not going to happen. Besides, I didn't like their attitude based on when I applied for a job there about four years ago. I was sent downstairs to fill out my application and wait in line with the dozens of other eager-faced servers. Their application was one of those that you have to put way more effort into than you should for a waiting job. Seriously, I spent less time writing college research papers than I did their application. "What does good service mean to you?" and "Please describe your favorite dining experience" and all that other bullshit is too much. Really, the application should say, "Can you carry a tray, do you have a pen and when can you start?" After patiently waiting my turn to speak with a manager who was younger than some of my aprons, it was finally my turn. The lady took one look at my resume and said, "based on your experience, I think you might be better suited at a diner." A diner? How rude. This coming from someone who seemed better suited to be a cheap three dollar prostitute like the one I just watched stumble out of the Roxy Delicatessen.

I finally ended up at Rosa Mexicano who was having a happy hour. Half price margaritas and appetizers? Where have you been all my life? I walked in and thought about the three days I worked there many years ago. On my third day of training, I was told how much I would be tipping out. I like keeping more than 40% of my tips so I Speedy Rodriguez'ed my ass out of there. I only remember two things about working there. One is that you gave way too much money to the guacamole guy and coffee girl. The other thing I recall is that a fellow server told me I seemed familiar. After a whole morning of him trying to figure out how he knew me, he finally realized he had seen me do a production of The Full Monty. "Oh, you saw that?" I said. "That was such a fun show. Getting naked on stage was so fulfilling." His face went a little pale as it dawned on him that he was now talking to a guy he had seen naked. His heterosexual world was spinning faster than the waiter turnover at Rosa Mexicano. After that moment, he just seemed awkward around me. No matter, I quit later that day. Those bitches never paid me for my training either. The least they could have done was comp my margarita last week.

And so it goes. The restaurants we all work in are so often places that pay the bills but do little else. They come and go from our lives as we try to find something to take its place. Today I am trying to get an acting job to take the place of slinging hash. If it happens, great. If not, I will look to William Shakespeare for inspiration. "All the world is a stage, and all the men and women merely players." It's just that sometimes my stage has a ten table station and my leading lady thinks her coffee is not hot enough. Off to my audition.

(Shout out to Doug, one of the best Equity monitors ever!)

Just Say No To Happy Meals?

Have you heard about this proposed ban in New York City that would no longer allow toys to be served with Happy Meals because the toys are making kids fat? Councilman Leroy Comrie will push the Fast Food Toy Ban Bill which will limit any meal that comes with a toy to under 500 calories. Of course the councilman used himself as an example saying that he used to eat Happy Meals and other junk food growing up which would explain why he tips the scales at humongous these days. But I did a little digging and there is no way this ass was eating Happy Meals unless he hopped into a time machine. I learned that he graduated from Jamaica high school in 1976 making him about 51 years old today. The Happy Meal was introduced in June of 1979 when he was about 20 years old. So is he saying that the reason he is fat now is because of all those Happy Meals he ate during his final semesters of college?

First off, if a fucking toy comes with an unhealthy fast food meal and the kid wants it really bad, isn't it the parents job to decide whether or not they can eat it? Now, I don't have kids of my own, but I was pretty sure that parents have control of what their kids eat. Unless the six year old has a part-time job at The Gap and has some spending money of their own, they ain't gonna be driving their asses up to McDonald's for a Happy Meal. Never mind that six-year olds can't drive. And do kids really want a Happy Meal because of the toy? Does this guy think that by not putting a toy in the meal, that kids will simply disown McDonald's? No, they eat that shit because it's good. And the parents feed them that shit because it's cheap. And fast. The toy is icing on the cake. Or the grease on the bun.

To me, it seems like this guy just wanted to get some face time in the news media so he decided to steal this idea from San Francisco. I've got nothing against media whores because that would be the pot calling the kettle black, but come on. If he really thinks that keeping the toys out of fucking Happy Meals is going to make a difference, he needs to pull the Cinnabon out of his ass and wipe the frosting from his eyes. If a kids wants a Happy Meal and it comes with some plastic piece of crap toy from Shrek or whatever the fuck movie needs promoting, let the kid have it. But hey, about this: after they eat it, maybe take the kid to the park and let him play for a while. Or maybe take the stairs instead of the elevator. Or make him take the dog for a walk. But if the kid is going to eat Happy Meals four or five times a week and then sit on the couch and play X-box, Wii or Atari (old school), he might grow up to be a fat tub of Thousand Island Dressing. True, that fat tub of Thousand Island Dressing can run for city council but he'll still be a fat tub of Thousand Island Dressing.

I say leave the freaking toys alone and let's just ask parents to make better choices. But, what do I know? I'm just a bitchy waiter who doesn't have kids or eat Happy Meals.

I ♥ Vegetarians, Part 2

Since I pissed of so many vegetarians a few weeks ago, I thought I would offer this video as an apology. I will be going to dinner tonight at a Thai restaurant and ordering vegetarian spring rolls.

Happy eating everyone!

love,

A Comment on Comments

What is it with people who leave these nasty ass comments as Anonymous? Very rarely does someone leave a comment that is less than kind and then have the balls to sign their name. Even if they did sign their name, who fucking cares? What am I gonna do? Go to your blogspot profile and then send you an email? Oooh, scary. Check out what this anonymous douchebag wrote:

I don't tip and I'm American. I usually get the feeling from most waiters/waitress that they look at their customers as paychecks rather then people. If you don't make enough money being a server you can quit. I too once worked a minimum wage job and unfortunately for me, society didn't deem me worthy of tips. I worked at McDonalds by the way.

Hey Anonymous, you can read this post for a full explanation of why I keep my job. As for you, you never tip because you feel that "most" of your servers look at you as a paycheck? Guess what, asshat, that's what you are. And if you feel that most do, what about those few who don't? They don't get tipped either? I'm sorry that you had the misfortune of working in a McDonald's (it has an apostrophe by the way, idiot.) but you didn't get tips there because you weren't hired as a tipped employee. You made minimum wage, right? Waiters have a different minimum wage which is about $2.13 an hour depending on the state. If you consistently do not tip and you go into the same restaurant more than a few times, I can guarantee that the servers hate you. I can't verify that they would do anything to your food, but it is very possible. Not likely since most servers (myself excluded of course) are highly professional people who take pride in their jobs. But they definitely don't want you in their station. It goes something like this:

Waiter A: Oh shit, there's that guy who used to work at McDonald's.
Waiter B: Hey did you know that McDonald's has an apostrophe in it?
Waiter A: Of course I do. Only dumb ass ignorant assholes who used to work at one wouldn't know that. Duh. Anyway, it's your turn to serve this guy because I had him last time and he never tips.
Waiter B: I know, I hate him. He's always looking at me like I'm just this person that's supposed to bring him his food. He's creepy.
Waiter A: Yeah, I know. I wonder why he doesn't tip.
Waiter B: I dunno. Maybe he can't afford it. Oh well, I'll serve him and hope for the best. That's what we do, right?
Waiter A: Right. Don't be mean to him though and spit in his food or anything. I feel sorry for him. I mean, he used to work at McDonald's.
Waiter B: I would never spit in his food. That would be so immature of me and unprofessional. I'll ask a cook to do it.
Waiter A: Yeah, that's totally what I was thinking. Cool.

McDonald's/Road Rage

Have we all seen this crazy fucking McDonald's addict who loses her shit when she finds out she can't get McNuggets? Supposebly, she was there before 10:30 in the morning and they were only serving breakfast. Well, this ho wasn't going to have that. She briefly considered filling out a comment card and then calling the McDonald's customer service hot line, but then she decided it would be better if she just out out of her car and started beating the shit out of the drive thru window clerk.

I have never had the misfortune of working in fast food. There was a summer after college where I made daily trips to Burger King and Dairy Queen (the royal "we") when I probably should have been put on their payroll, but never have I been officially. With my vast food service experience, if I ever take a foray into fast food, I would probably shoot right up the corporate ladder and be a shift leader immediately. Anyhoo, back to the video. This bitch is crazy for McNuggets but that McDonald's worker is ready for the fight. I particularly like when she grabs that trick's hair and tries to detach it from her head. And then they get the manager up in there too to fight the good fight. Out of everything though, the best part of the video is when she finally flees the scene and the next car drives like nothing happened up and is all, "Can I get a number two combo please? Super size me." The worst part of the video? No audio. In my mind, it goes something like this:

Driver: I want McNuggets.
McD's: We ain't got those. How 'bout a McGriddle?
Driver: I want McNuggets.
McD's: We ain't got those right now. How 'bout a hashbrown?
Driver: Don't make me cut you.
McD's: How 'bout a McMuffin?
Driver: I am gonna kick you ass bitch.
McD's: Manager! Manager!
Driver: (beating her) I'm gonna kick your ass, bitch. I want fucking McNuggets.
McD's: Bitch, I got your hair now, what you gonna do now, huh? What chu gonna do?
Driver: I'm gonna smash the fucking window with my hand and if I can't do that, I'm gonna get in my car and find something else to smash it with. Arrrg!
McD's: How 'bout an apple pie?
Driver: Arrg! (smashes window and drives away)
McD's: Thank you and have a nice day.

Anyone here work at McDonald's and care to share your viewpoint?

We don't like children

The restaurant I work in is not for children. I don't like kids. Cute ones are not any better than ugly ones, they all suck. However, people have in their head that our restaurant is for their children and constantly bring them in. When they come in with their offspring in the giant strollers and push furniture around to accommodate themselves it really pisses my shit off. For two Wednesdays in a row we have had a fucking Mommy and Me group overtake us. Nine women come in with at least nine strollers and then get all upset that there is no place to park them. Really? Why don't you park it up your fat asses, ladies? They take over a whole section and barricade themselves in behind the strollers. It's like the freaking Great Wall of China but instead of brick it's made of stroller and baby. And I can't get to the table to do the job that I don't want to do anyway. I have to navigate through the Stroller Wall being careful to not wake the little darlings just so I can take nine orders of salads with everything on the side and low fat dressing because they are all trying to lose their baby weight. Heads up ladies, the low-cal dressing that I am serving you is actually full fat because I don't give a shit about your baby weight. And you can all choke on the slices of lemon that you want for your water. You sit in my station for two hours and ignore your bratty crying whore children and ring up a check for 75 bucks and then tip me 10%. We don't have a children's menu, we don't have crayons or paper, the music is going to stay loud because that's what we do and we do not have American cheese. Get over it. Take your ugly baby and roll it down to McDonald's for a kiddie meal and while you're there get yourself a large number 5 combo because that baby weight is here to stay and you may as well live it up.
